Winnipeg mezzo-soprano, Elizabeth Hoyt-Surdhar is quickly making a name for herself as an engaging and detailed performer with a warm, agile voice. In the 2018-2019 season, she won both First Prize and the Judges Choice Award at the Flipside Opera Competition. She has performed as soloist with Concordia Symphony Orchestra, Symphony of the Kootenays, and Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra, and has given recitals for Edmonton Recital Society, St. Albert Chamber Music Society and the new “Arts on 817” concert series in Alberta.

In 2019-2020, Ms. Hoyt-Surdhar will perform with Manitoba Underground Opera (Dido, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas & Dido, Rolfe’s Aeneas and Dido) and will give recitals for The Millennium Library Concert Series and Skywalk Concerts in Winnipeg, MB with pianist Lisa Rumpel.

Recent opera engagements include Suor Zelatrice (Puccini’s Suor Angelica), Junon (Offenbach’s Orphée aux Enfers) and Dritte Knabe (Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte), as well as scenes from Britten's A MidSummer Night's Dream (Hermia) and Cavalli’s L’Egisto (Didone). Other performances include Flipside Opera’s Greeriade production and their Echoes of Spain concert, in partnership with the Winnipeg Classical Guitar Society.

Ms. Hoyt-Surdhar completed a Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Opera Performance under the tutelage of Tracy Dahl and has participated in renowned training programs including the Centre for Opera Studies in Italy and the Banff Centre for the Arts.

Women of Note

Elizabeth Hoyt-Surdhar (mezzo soprano) and Janet Scott-Hoyt (piano) 

“Women of Note” concert is a delightful collection of music that mixes songs by acclaimed female composers such as Clara Schumann and Cécile Chaminade with some of the repertoire’s most notable female characters: Dido the Queen of Carthage, Carmen the tragic gypsy heroine, and Rosina the fiesty girl determined to escape her captivity and arranged marriage. 

Characters are brought to life through a wide range of material: Spanish folk songs, sensuous French music, descriptive German poetry and the dramatic world of opera. Take part in the excitement of an Italian regatta race, an intimate mother-child lullaby and everything in between!
