COLuratura Mezzo - soprano


Winnipeg based mezzo soprano, Elizabeth Hoyt-Surdhar is quickly making a name for herself in western Canada as an engaging and detailed performer with a warm and agile voice. She was the 2018 Flipside Opera Competition Winner and Judges Choice Award recipient. Ms. Hoyt-Surdhar completed a Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Opera Performance under the tutelage of Tracy Dahl and has participated in renowned training programs including the Centre for Opera Studies in Italy and the Banff Centre for the Arts. Passionate about orchestral songs, she has performed with Concordia Symphony Orchestra (Berlioz, Les nuits d’été), Symphony of the Kootenays (Canadian Folk Sketches) and the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra (A Celtic Christmas). 

Ms. Hoyt-Surdhar’s previous opera roles include Suor Zelatrice (Puccini’s Suor Angelica), Junon (Offenbach’s Orphée aux Enfers) and Dritte Knabe (Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte) with Manitoba Underground Opera (2017,2016); Hermia (Britten's A MidSummer Night's Dream), Didone (Cavalli’s L’Egisto) with University of Manitoba Opera Scenes (2017); Eternita (Cavalli’s La Calisto) with COSI (2015); and Amor Celeste (Von Bigen’s Ordo Virtutum) with The Ordo Collective’s Alberta tour (2010). Ms. Hoyt-Surdhar performed the mezzo-soprano roles for the Canadian-composers Greeriad production with Flipside Opera. She is currently role-studying the title role of Rossini's La Cenerentola (Angelina).

Upcoming performances in 2018/2019 include a "Women of Note" recital tour in Alberta with award-winning pianist and pedagogue, Janet Scott-Hoyt.

Women of Note - touring 2018/2019

Elizabeth Hoyt-Surdhar (mezzo soprano) and Janet Scott-Hoyt (piano) 

“Women of Note” concert is a delightful collection of music that mixes songs by acclaimed female composers such as Clara Schumann and Cécile Chaminade with some of the repertoire’s most notable female characters: Dido the Queen of Carthage, Carmen the tragic gypsy heroine, and Rosina the fiesty girl determined to escape her captivity and arranged marriage. 

Characters are brought to life through a wide range of material: Spanish folk songs, sensuous French music, descriptive German poetry and the dramatic world of opera. Take part in the excitement of an Italian regatta race, an intimate mother-child lullaby and everything in between!
